Silica Dust a Recent Occupational Hazard in Australia

With a Senate inquiry investigating the industrial epidemic of deaths from toxic dust exposure, Mr Karakasch, 60, is adamant that industry and government must share responsibility.
 
"The UK banned abrasive blasting with silica in 1949. NSW banned sandblasting with silica in 1959," Mr Karakasch said. "The World Health Organisation said it was carcinogenic in 1996. But Victoria didn't ban it until 2002.
