Lead Paint Education in Bellows Falls, Vermont

At a glance:

A small Vermont village has used an old-style approach to informing residents about the hazards of lead paint in their homes.

They had volunteers go door to door, handing out leaflets and in some cases pointing out trouble spots to residents.

The Vermont Department of Health is studying the initiative, with a view to expanding it to other communities.

The town, Bellows Falls, has a relatively high rate of lead poisoning because its homes were built when lead was routinely used in paint.

BELLOWS FALLS -- Sometimes knocking on doors is the only way to get into a room.

So when local officials wanted to try to address the village's lead paint problem, they decided that the one way to get the information into people's hands would be by hand-delivering it.

Over the past few weeks, members of Lead Safe Bellows Falls, community volunteers and members of the Vermont Department of Health walked the streets with maps and boxes of information to try to let residents know about the dangers that might be lurking in the flaking paint on their window sills.
