Lead Paint Chips Fall from Navy Tower into Schoolyard

Paint chips containing lead are falling from a Navy water tower into an elementary school playground in Rhode Island.
 
This situation came to light in September 2005 and despite promises from the Navy, continues to pose a hazard.
 
Rhode Island State officials are trying to prod the Navy into action.


Portsmouth says US Navy is stalling on lead paint cleanup

Rhode Island state representatives and Portsmouth school officials held a press conference Monday to spur the Navy to quickly remediate lead paint chips that are falling from the water tower into the back playground where 318 Melville Elementary School students roam daily.
 
They maintained that the Navy has worked insufficiently to begin work on the 60-year-old tower since first notified in September and should be held under the same auspices as landlords who are required to take action on lead paint remediation within 30 days of notice under the Rhode Island lead hazard
