New Bedford Mass. High School Grounds Contaminated With Lead, PCBs

At a glance:

A second school in New Bedord, Mass. has been found to have contamination on its property. New Bedford High, which was built on the site of a city dump, has tested positive for PCBs, lead, and other heavy minerals and chemicals.  
 
Previously, a middle school in the area failed similar contamination tests. 
 
The level of contamination, while not "safe", does not constitute an immediate health threat according to authorities. 
 
A committee will study the matter. 
 


Tests shows soil around New Bedford High is contaminated

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) -- New Bedford officials say the soil in almost every open space on the city's high school campus is contaminated.
 
Testing was conducted at the request of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after PCB contamination was found at a nearby middle school. Tests also detected the presence of arsenic, barium, lead, mercury, cadmium and other chemicals.
