High Levels of Mold Found in New Orleans After Katrina

At a glance:

This study measured airborne mold levels in various locations in New Orleans in October and November 2005.

They found extremely high mold levels indoors and outdoors, particularly in areas that were flooded after Hurricane Katrina.

Forty-five different species of mold were identified, including Stachybotrys ("toxic mold"), Cladosporum, and Aspergillus/Penicillium. These types of molds cause symptoms such as major allergic and asthmatic attacks, pneumonia-like illnesses, and reactions to mold toxins (mycotoxins).

Researchers claim that the government has neither monitored mold levels nor done anything to help residents cope with the problem.
