Environmental Exposures Cause One Quarter of Disease Worldwide

At a glance:

The World Health Organization reports that almost a quarter of worldwide disease is due to preventable environmental exposure. 
 
Much of this is due to conditions in third world countries which foster malaria and gastrointestinal infections, but preventable cancers, traffic deaths (due to poor urban planning), and pulmonary disease due to occupational exposures are also included. 
 
In outlining which environmental conditions are preventable, the report provides guidance for countries to move forward in a way that protects the health of their citizens.

As much as 24% of global disease is caused by environmental exposures which can be averted. Well-targeted interventions can prevent much of this environmental risk, the World Health Organization (WHO) demonstrates in a report issued today. The report further estimates that more than 33% of disease in children under the age of 5 is caused by environmental exposures. Preventing environmental risk could save as many as four million lives a year, mostly in developing countries
