New Lead Paint Law to Take Effect in Rochester NY

At a glance:

The City of Rochester, NY has passed a law, which goes into effect July 1, that requires homes with old, peeling paint to remove or contain the old paint so that it will stay out of childrens' bloodstreams.

Citizens there are being educated about the dangers of lead, and how to minimize them.

Lead causes permanent health and behavioral problems, including reducing a child's IQ. It is estimated that 2% of children in the US overall have excess lead in their blood, but in some areas such as Rochester, where homes are older, the percentage reaches as high as 30%. Besides the obvious health consequences, it is a drain on community resources and a problem that is easily fixed when people are aware of it.
