EPA Proposes Lead Paint Renovation Regulations

At a glance:

The EPA has proposed a regulation to control the amount of lead paint dust released when older homes are remodelled. 
 
Contractors would have to undergo special training and certification, and follow specific procedures for pre-1978 home occupied by children under age 6. 
 
Critics say the proposal does not go far enough, and should apply to all older homes, as lead poisons older children as well; other critics say the proposal will drive up the costs of renovation, and encourage homeowners to hire cheaper, illegal contractors. 
 
Lead poisons hundreds of thousands of children in the US, leading to nervous system problems and brain damage.

After a decade of delays and facing a congressional goal to eliminate childhood lead poisoning by 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency is on the verge of adopting a hotly contested rule that tackles one of the last major dangers still posed by lead: the poisonous dust stirred up by remodeling.
 
Although lead paint was banned nearly 30 years ago, homeowners and their contractors can unwittingly create an invisible hazard for millions of children when they renovate their homes and unleash the potent, brain-damaging poison
