Tucson Water Contamination Settlement Proposed

At a glance:

Twenty-five years of litigation may finally be over for a community in Tucson, Arizona.

Residents sued the City of Tucson and Hughes Aircraft over chemical contamination in their water supply. TCE, an industrial solvent, was dumped in the area from 1952 to 1981, causing contamination up to 1000 times the safe level in the drinking water and causing a variety of illnesses relating to immune system disruptions.

If this proposed settlement from one of the city's insurance companies is accepted, it will be the final piece of the settlement, which totals around $130 million for 1600 plaintiffs and their lawyers.
