Alleged Fraud in Asbestos Litigation Examined

Allegations of fraud in the medical and legal professions have led to a request in a Pennsylvania court for dismissal of thousands of asbestos lawsuits in the US. 
 
Thousands more have already been thrown out, with plaintiffs forced to start the procedure over again in order to be compensated for diseases caused by asbestos exposure such as lung cancer and mesothelioma. 
 
Attorneys for defendants say many claims are bogus, with doctors and lawyers in conspiracy to manufacture false claims to raise payouts from companies whose employees worked with the hazardous material. They cite evidence such as doctors under oath refusing to testify, and screening companies operating without valid registry. 
 
The alleged frauds in both asbestosis and silicosis diagnoses are under investigation.


Dismissal of thousands of asbestos suits sought

In litigation filed today in U.S. District Court in Pennsylvania, defense attorneys are seeking to dismiss tens of thousands of asbestos lawsuits, many of them filed on behalf of Mississippians.
 
Each lawsuit involves patients diagnosed by six screening doctors, who have since refused to testify or have disavowed their diagnoses of more than 140,000 patients
