Lead Paint Suit in California to Proceed

The California Supreme Court has ruled that a lawsuit against paint manufacturers may proceed. The suit aims to force eight companies, including Atlantic Richfield Co. and Sherwin-Williams Co. to pay for lead paint removal on all types of buildings (public and private) in the Bay Area.  
 
The paint companies contend that the product was legal at the time of its sale; the plaintiffs (municipalities and public agencies) say that the companies actively promoted the lead paint and downplayed its dangers.

After years of litigation, eight major paint manufacturers may be on the verge of having to get the lead out -- of countless public and private buildings around California, that is.
 
The California Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to review a ruling that OK'd a suit seeking to force manufacturers, such as Atlantic Richfield Co. and Sherwin-Williams Co., to cover the costs of abating lead paint inside and outside all types of structures.
