Food Recalls to Include Retailer Information

At a glance:

A process is under way that would lead to more product recall information being released to consumers; specifically, which retail outlets would have sold meat or poultry that had later been recalled.  
 
Currently the product name, code and even photo are released but not the points of purchase. 
 
The proposal is in "comment period", and opposition to it from the industry revolves around competition issues. 
 
There is no legal structure in place to mandate food recalls. unlike those for defective vehicles or consumer products. Food recalls are voluntary, and the only recourse the USDA has is to seize the product or close down a plant.

USDA wants to spell out where recalled meat was sold

For the first time, the Department of Agriculture has proposed that consumers be told which supermarkets and retail outlets sold meat or poultry that was subject to a recall because of safety concerns.
 
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service publicizes recalls by issuing a news release, describing the food being recalled and any identifying codes, the name of the company that produced it, a contact person and, more recently, a picture of the product
