Lawsuit Aims to Have Big Tobacco Reimburse Medicare

Philip Morris USA and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. are among six tobacco companies named as defendants in a lawsuit by United Seniors Association Inc. which seeks to have the companies reimburse Medicare for its disbursements for smoking-related illnesses since 1999. 
 
United Seniors is a lobbying group which is attempting to pursue the lawsuit on behalf of American taxpayers.  
 
The lawyers for the tobacco companies have asked a judge to dismiss the case; other similar cases have not gone forward. 
 
The Seniors' group claims the tobacco companies misled the public about the dangers of tobacco, and should reimburse Medicare $60 billion.


Tobacco companies ask judge to dismiss Medicare lawsuit

BOSTON --Cigarette makers asked a federal judge Wednesday to dismiss a lawsuit by a group seeking to recover at least $60 billion spent by Medicare on smoking-related illnesses.
 
United Seniors Association Inc., a Virginia-based lobbying group for senior citizens, sued six tobacco companies last year, claiming they intentionally concealed the addictive properties of their cigarettes and should be held liable for Medicare's expenditures to treat illnesses such as lung cancer and emphysema
