Outbreak of Fungal Eye Infections in Singapore Studied

The Journal of the American Medical Association reports on the ongoing outbreak of fusarium keratitis, a rare but serious eye infection, in Singapore. 
 
Outbreaks of this infection worldwide are connected to Bausch & Lomb's Renu with MoistureLoc contact lens cleaner, which was withdrawn from the market in May. 
 
Bausch & Lomb thinks that the problem was caused by a reaction between the disinfectant alexidine, and polymers in the solution which seemed to inactivate the disinfectant. However experts blame poor contact lens hygiene as well.

TUESDAY, June 27 (HealthDay News) -- Health concerns focused on a recalled contact lens solution are continuing, with a report of 66 cases of a potentially blinding eye infection in Singapore.
 
It was outbreaks in Asia and the United States of cases of the fungal infection, called Fusarium keratitis, that sparked the May 15 market recall of Bausch & Lomb's lens solution ReNu with MoistureLoc
