Smokers With Wrinkles Have Higher Risk of COPD

Scientists have discovered that middle-aged smokers who have heavily wrinkled faces are at higher risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as a result of smoking. 
 
This finding might point to a common mechanism whereby skin damage and lung damage both occur for similar reasons in susceptible people.

WEDNESDAY, June 14 (HealthDay News) - British scientists have discovered a tantalizing new wrinkle in the understanding of smoking's unhealthy effects.
 
Middle-aged smokers whose faces were heavily wrinkled were five times as likely to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) as smokers whose faces were relatively smooth, the study out of Cambridge University found.
