New Studies Clarify Link Between Smoking and Cancer

This article describes four recent studies that try to shed some light on the association between smoking and cancer:
 
The studies suggest that:
 
1. A protein has been found whose blood levels are highest in non-smokers and lowest in smokers; but it was also established that in those who stop smoking, the blood levels increase again.
 
It is thought to be an anti-inflammatory agent that protects the lining of the lungs.
 
2. The non-smoking close relatives of lung cancer patients who never smoked have increased risk of lung cancer over other non-smokers.
 
3. Women who smoke or used to smoke have increased risk of ovarian cancer.
 
4. Lung cancer patients also exposed to second-hand smoke have higher mortality rates than those with lower exposure to second-hand smoke.

We know that smoking cessation is good, that it reduces the risk of lung cancer compared to continuation of smoking, but we don’t know the molecular basis for the lower risk,” said Jiping Chen, M.D., Ph.D., a Cancer Prevention Fellow at the National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Md.
 
Chen is the lead author of the study, which was the first to demonstrate that CC10 levels, normally high in non-smokers and low in smokers, could be restored after long-term smoking cessation.
 
CC10 is a protein that is expressed in the lining of the bronchial system. Its biology is not completely understood but it is known to play a role in protecting the lining of the respiratory tract from oxidative damage a
