Class Action Tobacco Lawsuit in Canada to Proceed

A class action lawsuit in Canada against Imperial Tobacco may proceed, according to an Appeal Court in British Columbia. 
 
The suit alleges deceptive marketing which implied that light or mild cigarettes were safer than regular cigarettes. 
 
The class was narrowed somewhat, to include only people who purchased this type of cigarette after May 8, 1997, instead of July, 1974. However this still leaves thousands of eligible plaintiffs.


BC court allows tobacco lawsuit to go ahead

VANCOUVER -- A class-action lawsuit against Imperial Tobacco over its marketing of cigarettes branded "mild" or "light" was given the go-ahead to proceed in an Appeal Court judgment handed down Thursday.
 
The big tobacco company had wanted to have the class-action status of the case thrown out.
