The Jones Act: This is a series of laws bearing the name of Sen. Wesley R. Jones, who authored the Merchant Marine Act of 1920. It allows seamen to seek compensation for injuries resulting from the negligence of their employers or co-workers while on the job. An injured seaman may also make a claim against a vessel's owner on the grounds that the ship was not seaworthy.
