Cruise Illness (Stomach Virus) News

Risk of Virus on Cruise Increases with Trip Duration

At a glance:

A new study finds that the relative risk of contracting a stomach virus on a cruise rises with the length of the trip.

The illness rate (per passenger-day) almost doubled for a two to three week cruise as compared to a cruise of a week or less.

The virus in question, norovirus, probably comes on the ship with passengers or crew who are already infected, and tends to spread rapidly. Since 2002, when outbreaks became more frequent, cruise lines have greatly improved sanitation but that does not seem to have affected the rate of disease.

Risk of stomach bug is greater on longer cruises, study finds

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A three-week cruise sounds more enticing than a short Mexico sailing, but it can also raise the chances of contracting gastrointestinal illness, according to a new study. The report unveiled at the annual meeting of the federal Vessel Sanitation Program at Port Everglades, Fla., last week found that the risk of gastrointestinal illness is greater on longer cruises. It also shows that 2005 did not see a significant decline in the high levels of viral intestinal disease that abruptly began in 2002.

Industry specialists don't know why people on longer cruises are more at risk, but some speculate a higher number of days at sea without a port call could be a factor
