Sunscreen Labels Misleading: European Commission

The European Commission reports that it has found sunscreen labels to be misleading in the type of benefit claimed and that consumers are potentially at "dangerous" risk. 
 
Words such as "sunblock" imply that the suns rays are blocked, where in reality only certain rays are, and usually not the ones that cause skin cancer. 
 
The Commission is proposing new labelling regulations with clear instructions, warnings, and standardized protection ratings for both UVA and UVB. 
 
Lawsuits with a similar intent have been filed in California, claiming the public has been knowingly led into a false sense of security by sunscreen manufacturers and requesting new labelling practices and some refunds and damages.

The European Commission is claiming precisely what pending lawsuits in California are alleging, namely, that sunscreen labels are not only misleading, but potentially dangerous in that they lead consumers to believe that the products protect tem from skin cancer or premature aging when, in fact, the benefit of the products is limited to sunburn protection.
 
The Commission is concerned with such labeling terms as “sunblocker” that could give consumers the mistaken impression that the products give total protection from the sun’s damaging rays. In fact, no sunscreen product provides complete protection from danger
