State Farm Must Pay Up $13 Million in Tornado Lawsuit

In a case that could be seen as encouraging to last year's hurricane victims, a couple won a $13 million judgement against State Farm Fire & Casualty Co. in Oklahoma for tornado-related damages. 
 
It was part of a class-action suit claiming that State Farm intentionally underpaid policyholders after tornados destroyed their homes in 1999. 
 
Almost $10 million of the $13 million was punitive damages. State Farm denies that they or their engineering inspection company behaved improperly.

TULSA, Okla. (AP) - An Oklahoma couple was awarded nearly $13 million in a class-action lawsuit after a jury ruled that State Farm Fire & Casualty Co. intentionally underpaid claims from families whose homes were damaged by tornadoes seven years ago.
