Celebrity Cruise Line Wins Lawsuit Against Defective Filter Maker

The recent spate of gastrointestinal virus outbreaks on cruise ships is not a new phenomenon; in 1994 there was an outbreak of the far more dangerous Legionnaires' Disease on a Celebrity Cruise Line ship. 
 
Sixteen passengers on nine separate departures were affected, with one death. 
 
Passengers filed individual and class action lawsuits against Celebrity, and now Celebrity has won a judgement for itself against the company that provided the allegedly defective filter for their hot tub system, Essef Corp. 
 
A jury awarded the cruise line $193 million for damage to its image, legal costs and liability costs. 
 
The defendant, now known as Pentair Inc., vowed to appeal.

A federal court jury in New York on June 28th awarded Celebrity Cruise Lines, Inc. $193 million in damages in a suit stemming from a 1994 outbreak of Legionnaires' disease on the cruise ship Horizon.
 
At least 16 persons who had sailed on nine separate week-long cruises from April 30 to July 9, 1994 were subsequently found to have Legionaires' diease, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. One of the passengers later died.
