Wal-Mart Cleared of Negligence

At a glance:

Wal-Mart has successfully defended a lawsuit in South Carolina alleging negligence in its hiring of a registered sex offender who assaulted a ten year old girl in the store.

The offender has since died in prison.

The ruling in this lawsuit was that Wal-Mart was not negligent because at the time of the hiring it was not legally required to do background checks, and the employee lied about his past on his application.

Wal-Mart began doing background checks of prospective employees in 2004.
