Walmart: Nobody Did Background Checks Then

As part of the defense in its negligence trial for hiring a registered sex offender who ultimately assaulted a young girl inside one of their stores, Walmart claimed it was only doing what other retailers did at the time. 
 
Or more specifically, did not do - criminal background checks on prospective employees. 
 
That policy was changed in 2004; however the employee in question was hired in 1997. 
 
The trial continues.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Wal-Mart's defense team pointed to the hiring practices of other retailers, including Toys "R" Us, to bolster its case in a negligence law suit involving a convicted sex offender who molested a child in one of its stores.
 
Defense attorney Steve Morrison questioned a human resources and management expert, Dr. William Anthony, Ph.D., over whether Wal-Mart went against accepted hiring practices when it did not perform a criminal background check on the offender — Bobby Randall
