Medtronic Concerto Pacemaker Approved in Britain

A new generation of pacemakers is being developed that can detect fluid retention and transmit information about a patient's heart to remote locations. 
 
It can warn a patient if trouble is looming, before symptoms develop, with the idea of reducing the need for hospitalization. 
 
One such device, the Medtronic Concerto, has recently been approved in the UK.


Pacemaker that can predict heart failure

A heart pacemaker has been developed that warns patients if they need urgent medical help. It can also detect if the heart is going to stop and then deliver a life-saving electric current to shock it into working properly again.
 
A standard pacemaker regulates the heart’s rhythm - patients with an uneven heartbeat can suffer breathlessness, faintness and even heart failure.
