Hybrid Cochlear Implant Developed

At a glance:

A new type of cochlear implant is in development at the University of Iowa. A "hybrid" implant is intended for people with partial hearing loss, to supplement natural hearing. 
 
The implant is small and does not damage the inner ear. 
 
Tests of the device are underway on adults, and are expected to begin soon on children.

New hybrid implants, developed at the U of I, help people with partial hearing use the sound they can still hear and combine it with electrical hearing to help the patient hear better and in noisier environments, said Bruce Gantz, U of I professor and head of otolaryngology.
 
A $10.3 million federal grant, announced Wednesday, will help Iowa's Cochlear Implant Clinical Research Center continue this work, Gantz said
