New Implantable Defibrillator Studied

Medtronic has begun a clinical trial to study a new device in the treatment of mild to moderate heart failure.
 
The device is an implantable defibrillator, but also is able to transmit data via phone lines so that doctors can more closely monitor patient heart rate, pressure, body temperature and activity.

Medtronic Inc. said Tuesday it has launched a clinical trial for a new heart-failure device that would allow patients to transmit their heart information to physicians from home.
 
The study of 850 patients in about 75 sites across the United States involves traditional implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) devices, which stores normal heart rhythm after it detects dangerously fast heartbeats, with a new real-time tracking of heart pressure and rate, body temperature and patient activity.
