Three studies, recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, examine the reliability statistics for implantable cardiac defibrillators.

These devices are meant to detect an irregular heartbeat and deliver an electric shock to restore normal rhythm.

Compared to pacemakers, which speed up the heartbeat with lower power electrical impulses, the defibrillators are more complex and more prone to malfunction; however the risk of replacing one may be greater than the risk of living with a potentially defective one.

Guidant, now owned by Boston Scientific, has recalled both pacemakers and defibrillators in the past year.

Implantable Defibrillators Can Be Erratic, Studies Find

Washington Post - 4/26/2006 12:03 AM

Implantable defibrillators, which can deliver a life-saving shock to people with damaged hearts, had a roller-coaster record of reliability, as the rate of malfunctions fell in the early years, rose in the late 1990s and recently declined again.

Compared with pacemakers, which are simpler and serve a different purpose, implantable defibrillators are five to 20 times more likely to malfunction and need replacement
