Implantable Heart Device Makers Need Better Oversight

A doctor's group, the Heart Rhythm Society, has called for better oversight of their products and better communication between medical device makers, doctors, and government with regard to defective devices and recalls.
 
Several recalls occurred last year, some invoving Guidant, now owned by Boston Scientific.
 
However another study found that people who already have recalled devices implanted in their chests may be better off leaving them there as opposed to replacing them with regard to overall risk.

A doctor’s group on Wednesday called for makers of implantable heart devices to keep better track of safety problems while a separate report warned that replacing defective heart defibrillators puts patients at much higher risk than initially believed.
 
The doctor’s group, The Heart Rhythm Society, released draft guidelines for doctors and government on how to warn the public about potentially faulty devices.
