Some Bausch & Lomb Eye Infection Patients Need Transplants

At a glance:

Almost one third of those affected by the recent outbreak of Fusarium keratitis, the fungal eye infection associated with a Bausch & Lomb contact lens solution, have required a corneal transplant, and the figure could go as high as 50%, according to doctors. 
 
The solution, ReNu with MoistureLoc, was pulled from the market on May 15 and should not be used. It's still unclear whether any generic contact lens solutions are still available with this particular formulation. 
 
The reason why this solution seems to cause the infection is still unknown.

THURSDAY, May 25 (HealthDay News) -- Thirty-seven of 120 people with a severe fungal eye infection linked to a popular Bausch & Lomb contact lens solution have had to have corneal transplants, U.S. officials reported Thursday.
 
That's 31 percent of the Fusarium keratitis cases examined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; eight corneal transplants had been reported by government officials earlier this month
