Virginia Hospital Sued for Surgical Malpractice

Sentara Obici Hospital in Virginia is being sued for surgical malpractice following the death of a district judge who had surgery there.  
 
The claim is, a sponge was left in the judge's body during abdominal surgery in 2004 due to negligence by surgical assistants. This led to pain, infection, and more surgery, and resulted in his not being a candidate for chemotherapy for pancreatic cancer which was discovered the following year. 
 
The estate is requesting $1.75 million in damages.

SUFFOLK -- The estate of a deceased Suffolk judge is suing Sentara Obici Hospital for $1.75 million for leaving a surgical sponge in his abdomen, causing him extreme pain and emotional anguish, according to a malpractice lawsuit filed in Suffolk Circuit Court.
 
Former Suffolk General District Judge Gordon Blair Harry died Aug. 4, 2005, at the age of 62 of pancreatic cancer. But he was unable to undergo chemotherapy to treat his cancer because of his dire health condition caused by the sponge, the suit states further
