A Gigabyte, More or Less...

At a glance:

Western Digital has settled a class action lawsuit brought by purchasers of its hard drive disks.

The lawsuit claimed that the company overstated the storage capacity of its disk so buyers did not receive what they paid for.

The problem is the variable definition of gigabyte (GB) which for disk makers is often rounded down to the decimal, as 1 billion bytes, while it is actually a binary number, 1,073,741,824 bytes.

So an "80 GB" disk may actually hold only 74 GB of storage.

Depending on your definition.

The lawsuit class will receive free recovery software, and Western Digital will label its products more accurately in the future.
