Skilling Wants New Trial in Enron Case

Jeffrey Skilling, one of the Enron executives recently convicted of fraud, conspiracy and insider trading, has asked for a new trial on the grounds that the evidence against him is "legally insufficient".  
 
Skilling currently awaits sentencing, which was recently moved from Sept. 11 to Oct. 23 because of scheduling problems. 
 
It is expected that Skilling will appeal the conviction if the motion for a new trial is denied.

Jeffrey Skilling, the former Enron chief executive officer convicted last month of helping to mastermind a multibillion-dollar fraud at the company, asked a federal judge to set aside the verdict or grant him a new trial.
 
In a motion filed today with U.S. District Judge Sim Lake in Houston, Skilling, 52, said the evidence presented at trial was "legally insufficient." Jurors convicted him and former Enron Chairman Kenneth Lay, 64, of fraud and conspiracy in connection with the 2001 collapse of the Houston-based energy trader. They face at least 25 years in prison at sentencing
