British Bankers Extradited to US on Enron Charges

At a glance:

Three British bankers are to be sent to the US to face trial on fraud charges relating to Enron dealings. 
 
The bankers fought their extradition all the way up to the European Court of Human Rights, but failed. 
 
Allegations were that they cheated their employer, a unit of the Royal Bank of Scotland, of over $7 million by fraudulent business dealings.  
 
The extradition is controversial because it occurred on the basis of a treaty intended to facilitate bringing terrorists to court, and is not reciprocal between the US and Britain.

LONDON — Three British bankers wanted on Enron-related fraud charges are to be extradited to the United States after the failure Tuesday of a last-ditch appeal to the European Court of Human Rights to halt their deportation.
 
The court was the last avenue of appeal for the three former executives at Greenwich NatWest, a unit of Royal Bank of Scotland Group, who have become a cause celebre in Britain because of the controversial legislation used to pursue their extradition.
