Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs go Generic; Will they go OTC Too?

Now that some of the cholesterol-lowering statin drugs are beginning to appear in generic form, with Pravochol already approved, a move is on to provide them over-the-counter, that is, without prescription. 
 
It would make the drugs cheaper and more accessible but the worry is that people would take them without sufficient monitoring and would thus not have the dosage adjusted properly and would be at greater risk for side effects, some of which are serious. 
 
For example, blood tests to measure liver function should be regularly taken while on these medications. 
 
Another concern is that insurance policies might not cover non-prescription drugs.
