Vioxx Risk Kicks in Quickly According to Canadian Study

A new Canadian study suggests that the effects of Vioxx on heart attack risk may occur in as little as a week. 
 
While Merck, the drug's maker, insists that any risk occurs only after long term use, this and other data could have an effect on the outcome of thousands of lawsuits claiming damages from Vioxx use. 
 
Other findings from this study were that length of Vioxx treatment was not significant and that risk declined if treatment was stopped. 
 


Vioxx Heart Attacks May Occur in 2 Weeks, Study Says

May 2 (Bloomberg) -- Merck & Co.'s Vioxx painkiller may raise the risk of a heart attack within two weeks after patients start taking the drug, earlier than previous studies have shown, according to Canadian researchers.
 
More than a fourth of 239 elderly patients who had heart attacks while on Vioxx did so within six to 13 days after first taking the drug, according to a study published online today by the Canadian Medical Association Journal. The research was based on an analysis of thousands of health records in Quebec.
