Vioxx News: Testimony Begins in California Vioxx Trial: Merck Did Not Submit Test Results to FDA

The former head of Merck's research laboratories was heard in a video deposition on the second day of the Vioxx trial in California. Dr. Edward Scolnick said that two studies in 2001 showed that patients on Vioxx were 2-4 times more likely to die than patients on placebo; however Merck did not submit these results to the FDA.

Merck is being sued by a Southern California man who claims Vioxx caused his heart attack.

LOS ANGELES - Merck & Co. did not inform federal authorities about two clinical trials in which users of the painkiller Vioxx were more likely to die than people given a placebo, jurors in the first Vioxx liability case to go to trial in California were told Wednesday.

Dr. Edward Scolnick, the former head of Merck & Co.'s research laboratories, said in a videotaped deposition that he did not believe the numbers were coincidental
