Policosanol Found Not Effective Cholesterol-Reducer in New Study

Policosanol, a natural supplement, was not effective in lowering high cholesterol levels in a recent study. 
 
This contradicts previous studies which did show an effect. 
 
More research is needed but for now recommendations are for people with dangerously high cholesterol to follow doctor's instructions on lifestyle changes and medication, and for those with low cholesterol who want to keep it low, to adopt a healthy lifestyle and consume more fiber. 
 


Popular Supplement Doesn't Reduce High Cholesterol

Countering previous research, a new study found that the nutritional supplement policosanol wasn't any more effective at lowering cholesterol than a placebo.
 
"Policosanol had no effects on blood lipids beyond placebo, not even with very high doses," said study author Dr. Heiner Berthold, a professor of clinical pharmacology at the University of Cologne, and executive secretary of the Drug Commission of the German Medical Association, in Berlin.
