Suicide Risk: Greater with Depression or Antidepressants?

According to the Harvard Mental Health Letter, the reports of risk of suicide in children and adolescents taking antidepressant medication could be exaggerated. 
 
Despite the small statistical risk seen in some studies, the overall incidence of suicide in young people is sharply down since the new classes of antidepressants came on the market in the 1990s. There is other conflicting evidence as well. 
 
The risks of depression itself are significant and should be weighed when deciding on a course of therapy, and close contact with the physician is a must.

BOSTON, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- New research is shedding light on the ongoing controversy over whether antidepressant medications help depressed children and adolescents -- and how the benefits compare to the risk of suicidal impulses and attempts, reports the June issue of the Harvard Mental Health Letter.
 
Researchers examined data from placebo-controlled clinical trials involving 11 different drugs. Of more than 4,500 patients in 24 trials, none committed suicide. When all the studies were combined, patients taking the drugs showed slightly more suicidal tendencies
