Adderall, Ritalin Abused by Students

At a glance:

Students from middle school on up are turning to ADHD drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin as study aids. 
 
With so many children on these drugs for ADHD, it's easy for their peers to beg, buy, or even steal pills.  
 
While they may temporarily help them to focus, these drugs are dangerous and addictive. Side effects include high blood pressure which can lead to heart attack or stroke, even in the young. Parents should be on the lookout for signs of weight loss, insomnia and mood swings in their children.


Students abusing ADHD drugs

Many of today's stressed-out, sleep-starved students are turning to prescription amphetamines such as Adderall for an edge, especially with final exams coming up this month, doctors and counselors say. Others pop the pills for a new high, with a lower risk of getting caught.
 
Nurses say the abuse reflects a wave of children so dependent upon pills that they've earned the title "Generation Rx." ADHD-related prescriptions swelled in the 1990s
