Statin Drugs May Protect Against Cataracts

At a glance:

A study to investigate whether cholesterol-lowering drugs had adverse effects on the eyes, has found the opposite: statin drugs seem to reduce the incidence of cataracts, a very common eye condition in the elderly. 
 
These drugs, such as Lipitor, lower cholesterol and are used to prevent heart attack and stroke, however they were previously found to confer some protection against other eye diseases, glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs can reduce the incidence of the most common type of cataract by 45 percent, according to a five-year study of nearly 1,300 people.
 
Researchers were surprised at the findings because several potential cholesterol-lowering drugs never made it to market because studies showed that they caused cloudiness and other eye problems.
