Antidepressant Therapy Should Be Closely Monitored in Seniors

A recent Canadian study suggests that people over the age of 65 who begin treatment with SSRI antidepressants such as Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft, have a higher risk of suicide but only during the first month of treatment. 
 
However doctors feel the potential benefits of treatment outweigh this risk, which can be balanced by close monitoring of patients.

Seniors are nearly five times more likely to commit suicide in the first month after they start taking antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil or Zoloft, a Canadian study concludes.
 
But it also found that the overall risk of suicide among seniors taking antidepressants is low, and that the risk with new drugs is high for just the initial month of taking the medications
