New Osteoporosis Drug, Forteo, No Better Than Fosamax

A government-funded study indicates that a new osteoporosis medication, Teriparatide (Forteo) works no better than alendronate (Fosamax) but is eight times more expensive. 
 
There may be patients for whom the new drug is indicated, for example, those with severe disease or who do not respond to standard treatment, but for most, the benefit does not justify the cost especially where resources are limited.

TUESDAY, June 13 (HealthDay News) -- A new drug to treat osteoporosis may be no more effective than existing drugs -- and cost eight times as much, a new study finds.
 
Teriparatide, sold under the brand name Forteo, did not provide better, more cost-effective results than the already commonly prescribed alendronate, sold under the brand name Fosamax, concludes a U.S. government-funded study conducted by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine
