FDA Gives Nexavar Fast Track Status for Liver Cancer

At a glance:

A drug that is currently in use for kidney cancer will received "fast track" review by the FDA for treating liver cancer patients. 
 
That means that Nexavar, made by Onyx Pharmaceuticals, may be available for this use sooner than would normally be the case. The FDA confers fast track status on drugs that are intended for life-threatening conditions where there is no approved satisfactory treatment.

Biopharmaceutical company Onyx Pharmaceuticals Inc. received news from U.S. regulators Tuesday that its drug Nexavar would receive an accelerated review for treatment of liver cancer.
 
On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave Emeryville-based Onyx and its partner on the drug, Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corp., "fast track" status, given to drugs that treat serious or life-threatening diseases where there is an unmet medical need. Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the world, and is most prevalent in developing countries.
