No Risk of Birth Defects With Paxil: Study

At a glance:

A study at a German university found that taking the antidepressant Paxil during pregnancy did not pose an increased risk of birth defects.

This study contradicts the findings of a previous American study, which found some heart abnormalities in the babies of Paxil users.

While the risk is still uncertain, patients are urged to use caution.

ULM, Germany, June 20 (UPI) -- A German study has found no indication that the anti-depressant Paxil increases birth defects when used by pregnant women.

Researchers at the University of Ulm tracked 119 women who used the drug during pregnancy and compared them to a control group of 645 women, the BBC reported. They found the same rate of birth defects but found that the women on Seroxat were more likely to opt for abortions, whether because of depression or of fear of birth defects.
