Arthritis Medications Still Have Stomach Risks

At a glance:

With all the publicity surrounding the heart and stroke risk of drugs such as Vioxx, the stomach risks have been ignored. Many non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are available without a prescription (aspirin, ibuprofen)and people may combine them with other drugs inappropriately and fail to be monitored for stomach side effects.

Only about half of those taking medications for arthritis discuss it with their doctors, the study found, but one in ten ended up in hospital with dangerous stomach ulcers
