Merck Response to New England Journal of Medicine Retraction

From the "if I say it, that makes it so" file, the drugmaker Merck continues to insist that studies originally reported in the New England Journal of Medicine are still valid despite a correction issued by that publication. 
 
The Journal retracted the part of the article that concluded that Vioxx heart risk only begins after 18 months of use, after data was re-analyzed. 
 
Merck still insists it will fight the over 11,000 Vioxx liability lawsuits one at a time.


Merck says Vioxx risk unchanged by data correction

NEW YORK, June 26 (Reuters) - Merck & Co said on Monday that it stands by the original findings of the study that led to the withdrawal of its pain drug Vioxx from the market, despite a correction to the description of how some of the data were analyzed.
 
Merck said it still believes the data from the study confirms that the increased risk of heart attack and stroke from Vioxx begins only after the medicine has been taken for 18 months, although the New England Journal of Medicine cast doubts on that conclusion earlier on Monday
