Vioxx Study Retraction Issued by New England Journal of Medicine

At a glance:

The New England Journal of Medicine has issued a correction with regard to a study on the heart risks of Vioxx.

The study, released in 2005 and funded by Merck, the drug company that made Vioxx, concluded that the risks of heart attack began only after 18 months of Vioxx treatment.

A followup study, however, adds more data which suggests that the risk begins after only 4 to 6 months.

The New England Journal of Medicine thus retracted claims relating to the timing of heart damage when taking Vioxx.

The finding has significance for Vioxx liability litigation, and also for people still taking other Cox-2 inhibitors such as Celebrex.
