Less is More, for Bad Cholesterol in Diabetics

A study out of the UK suggests that higher doses of cholesterol-lowering drugs such as Lipitor may provide benefits to patients who already have heart disease and diabetes. That is, lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol even further than the levels now recommended would protect these patients from stroke or heart attack even more. 
 
Lowering the average LDL level from 99 to 77 resulted in a 25% reduction in the occurrence of heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest and death over 5 years in a test group with diabetes; similar results were previously found in patients with heart disease. 
 


Lower is better for diabetics' bad cholesterol

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Lowering LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels substantially below currently recommended levels significantly reduces the chances that people with diabetes and heart disease will suffer a stroke or heart attack, researchers report.
 
Previously, a study showed that intensive cholesterol-lowering using the statin drug Lipitor at 80 milligrams per day rather than at 10 milligrams per day increased clinical benefits for patients with stable coronary disease, Dr. James Shepherd of the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, UK and colleagues note in the June issue of Diabetes Care
