New Arthritis Treatment Approved in Canada

At a glance:

Health Canada has approved a new medication, rituximab (Rituxan) for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, to be used in combination with Methotrexate for patients resistant to other therapies. 
 
Rituxan selectively binds to "B" cells which are thought to play a large role in the disease. 
 
Rituxan has already been used to treat Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and is generally well-tolerated.

MISSISSAUGA, ON, June 20 /CNW/ - Hoffmann-La Roche Limited announced
 
today that Health Canada has approved Rituxan(R) (rituximab) in combination
 
with methotrexate to reduce signs and symptoms in adult patients with
 
moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis who have had an inadequate
 
response or intolerance to one or more tumour necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor
 
therapies.
 
Rheumatoid arthritis affects 300,000 individuals or every one in 100
 
Canadians(1). Rituxan is the first in a new class of biologic therapies that
 
selectively targets B-cells which are thought to play a key role in the
 
development and progression of the disease
